I wanted to share a couple tips on scalp care. I have had many clients tell me that their scalps are flaky, dry, tight, itchy, slightly painful. Most of what I’m seeing is that clients aren't cleansing their hair enough because of the pandemic and lack of social activities or not washing their hair correctly. Some clients have scalps that look healthy and dont have build up, but still experience the tight, itchiness skin. If that is you I recommend you to seek a medical professional to take a look at your scalp to make sure it isn't something that needs medication.
I am all for the lazier lifestyle but maintaining hygiene it very important still because if we do not take care of it now it can lead to other skin conditions. So below will be a How-To on hair washing to make sure we are properly taking care of our scalps to prevent build up/flakiness.
The process of removal might take more than one wash to get rid of the build up. Please be patient with this process because it didn't take one night for the build up to happen, so it will take more than one scalp prep to remove it.
Tools Needed:
- Comb and Brush
- KEVIN.MURPHY’S BALANCING.WASH
- Your daily conditioner.
Build Up Removal.
( if you don’t have a lot of build up you can move to step 3 and start there)
Brush your hair from roots to ends making sure you are brushing your scalp to break up the build up and distributing natural oils to your ends.
For short hair, take your comb and comb through your making sure you are combing your scalp again to break up the build up.
If you have a lot of build up, go through your scalp with your comb and zig zag across your scalp slowly but firmly to continue to break up the buildup. Don't pretend you are a Julliard violinist and terrorize your scalp with rough zig zags.
2. Rinse your hair in the shower to remove the build up that was lifted.
3. Grab some BALANCING.WASH (shampoo) squeeze about a nickel size into your wet palms. (if you can more hair start with this much then add more shampoo later)
4. Lather the shampoo back and forth until it looks creamy (images below)
5. Apply the creamy texture to your roots at the temples, top of the head, nape area and crown.
5. Rewet your hair slightly
6. Use your finger PADS not your finger TIPS. You can think of your finger pads where your finger prints can be found (images below)
8. Gently work the shampoo until a lather forms. Don't forgot to massage the shampoo on the top of your head and the crown of your head. (image below)
9. If a lather does not form, please go through and redo steps 3-8.
12. This can happen if you have a lot of hair or your hair is very dirty and needs to be cleansed twice. That’s okay and can happen to many people who wait a long time in between washes.
13. After cleansing, follow with your conditioner of choice. Conditioner is used at your discretion many people only apply to their ends, some use it all over. It depends on what your oil levels are at.
14. Rinse with cooler water to close the cuticle and you completed your hair wash.
